It is tempting to carry an old search habit into a new kind of interface. We see a link in an AI answer and immediately ask where it appeared: first, last, inline, or hidden behind a source panel. Position still affects attention, but it no longer tells the whole story because an answer has become a small journey rather than a list of destinations.
That difference can feel unsettling to anyone accustomed to counting rankings. A ranked page begins with choice: the reader scans several options and decides where to go. A generated answer begins with interpretation: the system has already assembled a provisional account, and the reader must decide whether to accept it, inspect it, or carry the conversation somewhere more specific.
The useful question is therefore not simply whether a site was visible. It is whether the appearance of that site gave the reader a worthwhile next move. A link that opens a clearer explanation, a contrasting case, or the underlying evidence has a different kind of value from a link that is merely present beside a finished-looking sentence.

A source that gives a precise concept a name, places a statistic in its conditions, or states what remains unknown can support a better next step.
